Chickens are the oldest living relative of the T-Rex! Remnants of which still lurk in today’s feathered wonders such as feathers, (yes some dinosaurs had feathers), similar shaped eggs along with hand-like scaly feet with sharp claws. Chicken embryos still have a dinosaur-like tail, the gene for which turns off before the egg hatches. Clever pigs Pigs have been shown to have cognitive capabilities equal to or exceeding those of dogs, chimpanzees and even small children. Studies have proven they can work out how to manipulate the joystick of a computer game! Pigs are also incredibly clean. Given the chance, they will never toilet where they eat and sleep. I miss ewe! Sheep are highly social with sophisticated emotional skills that can recognise human and animal faces. Research increasingly suggests that sheep can form images in their brain of absent individuals when they are not visible, just as humans would think about a friend or family member that they miss. The scoop on turkey poop A turkey’s gender can be determined by the shape of their droppings. For male turkeys, known as Toms, they have a distinct spiral shaped poop, whilst females or hen’s poop can be distinguished by a “J” shape. This is due to the different shape of their cloaca, their elimination organ. Here’s looking at you, kid! Goats now have been added to the growing list of animals who can follow the gaze of humans. They too can look into the eyes of a human and seek help. Just ask our friend Steady Eddie, as he looks deep into your eyes then back to the leaf on the tree he wishes you to pick for him. Al-paca your lunch Alpacas, who belong to the same family as camels, have a split upper lip which they can manoeuvre to help pick grass and help draw it into their mouths. Not only are they beautiful, they are incredibly clean animals who use a communal “latrine” where they deposit all of their excrement. What They’re Saying “ I have been to Edgar’s Mission on tours over the years and now volunteer there. Not only are the tours educational, the sanctuary is a ‘feel good’ place with beautiful animals and people. Ellaine Di Battista “ A beautiful sanctuary for rescued animals. The staff and volunteers are fantastic. Definitely recommend a visit! Alina Pung “ A beautiful place to visit. We were inspired by the kindness we witnessed here. Thank you for the work that you do, and for making us feel so welcome. Natalie Whittle “ I have always dreamed a place like this where farm animals can live a wonderful life forgetting any cruelty! I visited Edgar’s Mission last week and this experience has changed my life forever. Awareness is the key to change the world!
